Writing
Assignment #5
Testing an Hypothesis: Bivariate Analysis
To complete this assignment, you will need to use SPSS 10.0 for Windows.
This assignment is based on the three variables from the General Social Survey codebook
that you have used in Writing Assignments #3 and 4.
- Present the two tables (crosstabulations) that are necessary to (begin
to) test the two hypotheses that you identified in Writing Assignment #3. Include both the
Total N's and the percentages in these tables. Make sure that the tables are percentagized
to test your hypotheses. Don't just give me the initial computer output from SPSS. Use the
computer output as the basis for the tables you create in SPSS or WORD. MAKE SURE
YOU ESTABLISH YOUR MISSING DATA CODES. RECODE IF NECESSARY.
- Present the chi-square statistic needed to test whether there is
independence between each independent variable and your dependent variable.
(Make sure that each of your tables has sufficient numbers of cases in each
cell to perform the chi-square analyses.)
- Summarize the tables in words, discussing the substance of what you
learn from this analysis of each of the two tables.
- Summarize what you learn from the chi-square statistics
associated with each table.
- Are the chi-squares statistically significant?
- Are your hypotheses supported?
