Welcome!
Although people tend to recognize leadership when
they see it, defining leadership with precision and detail is often more
difficult. The purpose of this competency model is to provide a detailed
description of
leadership to aid in the development of leaders.
The competency model (printable version) describes valuable skills, abilities, behaviors, attitudes, and knowledge
areas for leaders. Leaders are not going to master every competency. However, they
will need to be aware of all of them, know their own shortcomings, focus on
developing competencies in themselves, and be able to recognize these qualities in
others so they can select people who compensate for their weaknesses.
This model of leadership was developed through a
number of processes, including:
a)
reviewing the academic literature on leadership
b)
studying the practice of competency modeling and existing leadership competency
models
c)
analyzing the content of the Occupational Information Network (O*NET)
d)
interviewing members of the Central Michigan University community.
A full description of the processes involved in
the creation of the competency model can be found in
the technical report (printable
version).
