Abstract: There has been a proliferation of research on higher-order multidimensional constructs such as work morale (a second-order construct comprised of satisfaction and commitment, among other indicators) and engagement (a second-order construct comprised of empowerment, proactive personality, and commitment, among others). While the indicators of these multidimensional constructs are standalone variables backed by an extensive history of research, they do not necessarily sum to a coherent (and valid) whole. For example, the shared variance that is responsible for the emergence of higher-order constructs may be biased by error variance. I will present a set of studies that examines the extent to which common method variance biases interrelationships among the trait indicators of core self-evaluation (CSE), a popular multidimensional construct, and relationships of CSE with job satisfaction. I will conclude by presenting some recommendations for evaluating the validity of higher-order multidimensional constructs.
