Research and Teaching Interests
Professor Liu specializes in the history of education, ethnic identity, and nationalism in twentieth-century China and Taiwan. Her current project examines the Guomindang government's attempts to inculcate political loyalty in students through youth organizations, military training, and school curriculum. It compares the Guomindang efforts on mainland China during the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945) with the early years following its 1949 retreat to Taiwan where it re-established its government and party.
