Mitchell K. Hall took his
Ph.D. in recent United States history from the
University of Kentucky in 1987. He taught for two years
at Indiana University—Purdue University at Indianapolis
before arriving at CMU in 1989. He is the former editor
of the journal Peace & Change, and is a past
president of the Peace History Society. Research and Teaching
Interests
Professor Hall's research and teaching deal primarily,
though not exclusively, with the 1945-1975 era. He is
most interested in social movements and the links
between domestic politics and foreign policy issues. His
first two books, Because of Their Faith: CALCAV and
Religious Opposition to the Vietnam War and The
Vietnam War address these issues. More recently his
research and teaching interests have expanded to include
modern American popular culture. His latest book,
Crossroads: American Popular Culture and the Vietnam
Generation, surveys postwar film, television,
sports, and music. Hall's articles deal with antiwar
activities, student political activism, and links
between religious faith and attitudes toward war in the
twentieth century. Current book projects include surveys
of the Vietnam antiwar movement and the history of rock
and roll. Among the undergraduate courses he teaches on
a regular basis are The Vietnam War, The United States
since World War II, and The Rock and Roll Era.
