Delta Phi Alpha - German Honor Society
The national German Honorary
Society, Delta Phi Alpha, seeks to recognize excellence in the study of
German and to provide an incentive for higher scholarship. Chapter Iota
Tau at Central Michigan University offers membership to students at the
beginning of each Fall and Spring semester who have met the
qualifications. Each prospective member must be at least a sophomore in
standing, have the equivalent of two years of college German; be or have
been enrolled in a German course beyond German 202; have an overall
grade point average of at least 2.7; and have a grade point average of
3.3 in German. Once initiated, the students are recognized, lifetime
members of the Society.

Conversation Hour
A conversation hour is available each week for students to practice
speaking the language in an unstructured environment. CMU students who
have studied abroad and the three exchange students for the year from
Germany plan together to provide stimulating conversational opportunities.
This is a chance to find out about "everyday culture" and get to know
others interested in learning German.

German Club
The German club meets twice
a month and offers academic and social programs for all those interested
in German language and culture. In the past, the club has had programs
on Fraktur (old German script), German wines and wine labels, German
business opportunities, German board games, Deciphering German Codes
during WW II, Deutsche Weihnachten, and German opera and new films.
There always is a picnic, a banquet, and a night of cooking German
foods. The club has also sponsored field trips to Detroit (Detroit Art
Museum, Holocaust museum), Calvin College (theater productions in
German), Frankenmuth, and Shipshewana (Amish and Mennonite museum and
private families). Frequently, German-speaking natives present a
program talking about their experiences in Germany, Austria or
Switzerland and sharing artifacts and family heirlooms with the
students.
