Admission Requirements
To become a candidate for the degree of Master of Arts in English Language 
and Literature, with a concentration in Creative Writing, a student must have 
an undergraduate major or minor in English with a grade point average of at 
least 3.0 on a four-point scale and a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.7.  
For applicants whose native language is not English, a TOEFL score of 550 (CBT 213) 
and a TWE (Written Essay) of at least 5, or a MELAB of 85 are required. 
To be eligible for the Creative Writing concentration, the student must submit a 
portfolio of original poetry or fiction to the department of English Language and 
Literature for approval. 
  
Portfolio Requirements

The portfolio must be typed, double-spaced, bound in some manner and submitted in triplicate.
Name and page number should appear in the upper right-hand corner of each page.  
Manuscripts cannot be returned.
Poetry Portfolio:  15 pages minimum/20 pages maximum.
Fiction Portfolio:  30 pages minimum/40 pages maximum.
 
 
Degree Requirements

Students must complete at least 15 of their required 30 semester hours at or above 
the 600-level.  At the adviser's discretion up to six hours from other departments may be included.

Literary Criticism (3)
Language and Linguistics (3)
Professional Methodologies (3)
Two 600-level Seminars in Literature (6)
Area of Concentration:  Creative Writing
In addition to the required courses listed above, students must complete the following 15 hours:
Creative Writing Workshops (6)
Elective (3):  
        Authorized by the adviser and planned with the student.
Creative Thesis (6):  
        Students selecting the concentration in Creative Writing 
        must also write a creative thesis and pass an oral examination 
        on the thesis.
