Back to Work: Thanks to
all the participants at last weekend's conference, for making it an enjoyable and
productive occasion, and for dealing so well (I hope!) with the Saturday night fog.
This web site will be kept active for a time for purposes of reference. So
now it's back to work for everyone, and for many, time now to really bear down on
preparing that SAA paper!
Announcing: The 28th Midwest Conference on Andean and Amazonian Archaeology and Ethnohistory will be held at Indiana University - Purdue University at Fort Wayne on the last weekend of February 2000. This will be the first time the conference will meet in Fort Wayne and, depending on one's perspective and definition, either the last such meeting of the present millennium or the first of the next! Richard Sutter will be handling arrangements, no doubt with assistance from many others. Direct inquiries to him at |

Weather: As of Wednesday morning, most of lower Michigan from Mt.
Pleasant southward is snowless and has been so for a couple of weeks now. The snow
pack persists farther north but roads are bare and dry. For the first time in ages,
we are expecting about 3" of snow this evening from a storm that will mainly affect
the southern half of the lower peninsula. Even so, the forecast thereafter through
the weekend is for mild conditions with no major snow, sleet, or rain on the horizon
(since late January, this has been a very dull winter). In sum:
current predictions are that driving conditions will be ok for the weekend.
Dining: Anyone wishing to make last-minute reservations for the conference lunch or dinner may still do so, but please let me know as soon as possible. You may pay for them after you arrive. Second Mailing: The second conference announcement via the US Postal Service went out rather late-- sorry, but there have just been too many things to do. It contains basically a printed version of the weekend schedule and tentative program, which have been on this website now for about a week, and will perhaps be of interest to South Americanists who do not use either e-mail or the internet. So far as I am aware, everyone who has indicated an interest in attending has also been following the e-mail notices and, in most cases, also these webpages. I trust the maps, dining and lodging information, and weather information posted here will be sufficient for people's travelling needs. At some point I suspect the Midwest meetings will eliminate or greatly reduce the Postal Service mailings, but we are not quite to that point yet. ˇFeliz Viaje! It's a good weekend to go to an Andean/ Amazonian conference! And our various sponsors have all approved the necessary funding for the caterers to make this a pretty grand occasion. We look forward to seeing as many folks here as possible. |

| Preliminary
Schedule: A weekend schedule and tentative program have been prepared and
are accessible from the "Conference Details" webpage. Meal Reservations: Reminder: reservations for the Saturday luncheon and for the dinner banquet-- including a menu selection-- should be sent via e-mail or phone as soon as possible. |
| 13 February 1999 |
Meal Reservations: Please read the web page on dining arrangements and indicate your choices as soon as possible! Titles and Abstracts: These are being posted on a web page listed under "Conference Details," as soon as possible after they are received. Any late submissions should be sent right away. Schedule: I will not be able to post this for a few more days. We currently have 15 presentations planned, in which case it may be able to complete them all on Saturday (as was the practice in the first several years of the conference). This would leave Sunday open, possibly for long brunches, further informal discussions, and a more leisturely return trip home. |
| 2 February 1999 - Ground Hog's Day |
Conference participants who wish to make a presentation are asked to send in their title and brief abstract via e-mail, fax, or regular mail, as indicated in the "Call for Papers" web page. The non-functioning "Submit" buttons have been removed from the website for the time being, to eliminate further uncertainty and confusion. I will be away at the Moche conference February 5-7 and will be unable to respond to e-mail or phone inquiries, but I should be back again on February 8. Plans for in-conference catering, luncheons, Saturday evening dinner, and the all-important Saturday evening party are at last falling into place and look very promising! Information about meal preferences and reservations will be sent out next week via this web update, e-mail, and a second general mailing. There is still room for more presentations - please send in your titles and brief abstracts very soon! |

I have called a number of area accommodations to get the latest information about room
availability and rates. A few are already full for one or both nights due to other
conferences that will be in town that same weekend. A number of inns and motels with
space available are now listed on the lodging web page for the conference, along with toll
free numbers and their own web pages, as available. I have also added more
information about travel to and from the conference.
The deadline for the call for papers was originally set as February 1 but is being extended to Friday, February 5, to compensate for delays that have occurred due to technical problems in getting the form submission subroutine operational on our server. If it works, you will be able to send your proposed title and abstract, along with other information concerning address corrections, dining arrangements, etc., directly from the web page. If not, please rely on e-mail or US Postal Service mail. |

Most people interested in the conference have by now, I hope, received a written
announcement, read their e-mail announcement, or examined the conference web page.
Many of you have sent in address corrections by e-mail or otherwise, so we may update our
mailing lists. Please be sure to pass on news of the conference to anyone else who
may not have been included in the announcements.
I have updated and added a number of items to the web pages in the past week and will continue to do so. Regrettably, there have been some technical problems beyond my control concerning the use of Frontpage's form fields on our server, which is why the web forms for submitting abstracts, address changes, and meal reservations are not yet operating. I will try to get our technical support staff to do what is needed on the college server so that these options will be available very soon. On the other hand, it might be a good back-up for persons who wish to make a presentation to plan to send me the title and abstract either by US Mail or by e-mail, in case the web page submission does not become operative in time. I regret that we cannot get all the technology we want and need working as soon as we need it, but people have probably been grumbling about this since Paleolithic times. Anyone who might be attending should start making plans for lodging as soon as possible. I have noted on the web page (as well as the first mailing) the block of rooms being held for the conference at the Best Western Inn. Rooms not reserved by February 1 will be released to the public, though at the moment there is still plenty of space. There are many other motels in town, some of which are listed on the Chamber of Commerce web page I have linked to the conference web page. I will be adding more motel phone numbers and room rates for easy reference in the next few days. We are competing for lodging space with a few other conferences in Mt. Pleasant that weekend, as well as the huge influx of casino customers who come into town every weekend, so people should try not to wait until the last minute to reserve a room. Please feel free to contact me directly for questions via e-mail or otherwise at any time, and I will respond as soon as possible! |

| Greetings from CMU to everyone
interested in the coming Midwest Andean meetings! First mailings are being sent out
to an undoubtedly very incomplete address list. Unfortunately, there has been no
cumulative mailing list available for at least the past couple of conferences, of the sort
that used to be passed from one host to the next. Consequently, I have attempted to
reconstruct one based on the old data base retained since the last time CMU was host, in
1989, with at least some updates and corrections. Meanwhile, our e-mail list is
quite extensive and will hopefully reach many of those missing from the US mailing
list. Please pass on news of the conference
to interested colleagues and friends who may not yet have been informed! Two of our Andeanists, Karen Chávez and Sergio Chávez, are working at Yale University as visiting faculty for the academic year. They will be returning to Mt. Pleasant for the conference, and some of you may wish to contact them in New Haven. Most of the conference arrangements are being handled by myself-- charles.hastings@cmich.edu --as indicated in the Call for Papers. |
