Prior to joining the faculty of Central
Michigan University's
English Department in 1998, I spent several years teaching both children's
literature and composition at the university level. I am particularly
interested in worldwide literature for young readers and am active in the
United States Board on Books for Young People (USBBY),
a national section of the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY). The World through
Children's Books, which I edited, was sponsored by USBBY. During spring
semester, February-May 2003, In 2003, I spent five
months conducting research at the International
Youth Library in Munich,
Germany.
During part of the 1970s and 1980s, I worked in
the book publishing industry, followed by a stint editing The Five Owls,
a periodical about children's literature. My dissertation was an examination of
picture books from other countries (see Dissertation
Abstract). Most recently, I have been involved with the USBBY-CBC
Outstanding International Books award list, launched in 2006. I am currently
serving on the 2007 Outstanding International Books committee.
