COURSE DESCRIPTION:

            This course provides students with the opportunity to observe foreign language instruction in area high schools and also to participate in various aspects of that instruction.  Specific responsibilities will be jointly assigned by the cooperating teacher and the methods class instructor.  The work assigned will help students analyze and reflect upon the theoretical and methodological bases that will be concurrently presented in the 411 class.

 

STUDENTS WILL BE EXPECTED TO:

Attend the scheduled 412 class sessions.

Submit a copy of an expectation/agreement letter between the student and the cooperating teacher (due one week after placement).

bullet

Attend 30 classes in the assigned secondary school in accordance to the expectation/agreement letter.

bullet

Record each hour of classroom attendance on the Attendance Sheet, which is to be jointly signed by the cooperating teacher.

bullet

Complete tasks agreed upon in the expectation/agreement letter.

bullet

Video tape and self-evaluate one lesson (if mutually agreed upon in above letter).

bullet

Keep a reflective journal including such aspects as role of the teacher, classroom management, authentic assessment, diversity issues, various learning styles, etc.

Assemble and reflect on materials to be included in a professional portfolio.

 

RECORD-KEEPING PROCESS:

ASSESSMENT:

Only Credit or No Credit will be given for a final grade. (Credit implies that the student performed at least at the C+ level, in accordance with the methods class guideline.)

The following aspects of the experience will be evaluated:
bullet

Personal portfolio (reflective journal and support materials) as well as teaching video tape (if part of agreement) will be evaluated by the methods course teacher.

All aspects stipulated in the agreement letter as well as attendance, attitude, etc. will be evaluated by the cooperating teacher twice during the semester (midpoint and end).

PERSONAL PORTFOLIO REQUIREMENTS

FRN, GER, SPN 412 (Secondary)

 

Your portfolio will have two sections:  Narrative & Supportive materials

    I.      NARRATIVE SECTION (journals)

You will make entries in your journal to reflect on your experiences in the foreign language classroom.  (1)  Be sure to make connections to the assigned readings in the text and on-campus experiences.  Use the "Weekly" Assignments to guide you.  Summarize your 30 hours in a final, 2-3 page journal entry.  Place this reflective paper at the front of your 411 portfolio along with a cover sheet including your name, school, language, and cooperating teacher.  (2)  Be sure to include documentation of your mid-tier requirements as outline in the Agreement-Expectation Form signed by your cooperating teacher.

    II.   SUPPORT MATERIALS

Include samples of student work from lessons presented, games or other teaching tools you may have created, lesson plans, techniques that worked for you, organizational ideas, picture of bulletin boards you designed, student you worked with and any other evidence that would support your teaching experiences.  You may also include a section on ideas you observed in the classroom that you may want to use in the future.  All of these materials will be included in the Resource File for the 411 class.

 

    III.   ARRANGED MICRO TEACH

a.  This micro teach will be done in an actual classroom setting with your midtier classroom.  You are responsible for arranging all aspects of this experience with the guidance of the classroom teacher.

b.   Present or review a grammatical point, vocabulary, or a cultural concept.  Design  and  use a communicative follow-up activity. 

c.    This micro teach will be approximately 20 minutes, depending upon what you are teaching.

d.    You will turn in a lesson plan prior to the teach and a video as well as a self and student evaluations after the micro teach.  (The student forms are attached.)

e.    Timeline:

This Arranged Micro Teach may be done any time during the semester, preferably the last month of the 411 class.

As soon as you have arranged your micro teach, inform Dr. Knight of the date and what you plan to teach.  (Share a basic lesson plan with her.)

All evaluation forms and videos must be turned in by the last week of class.
