A Guide to Editing and Publishing Family Manuscripts

Resources in Editing and Publishing Family Manuscripts

The Clarke Historical Library has an extensive section on preserving family materials in the Online Resources section of its website at http://www.lib.cmich.edu/clarke/.  The Newberry Library Conservation Department gives good advice on preserving manuscripts and books.  It is available on the Internet at http://newberry.org  or http://newberry.org/conser/isc185.htm.

The number of web sites involving genealogy and family history is very large.  Helpful sites are:

The Library of Congress, which has an extensive catalog of genealogical information, can be reached on the Internet at http://lcweb.loc.gov/homepage/lchp.html.  See also bibliographies of genealogical material, such Genealogies in the Library of Congress (1972) and The National Union Catalog of Manuscript Collections, which locates manuscripts in archives around the country.

The Chicago Historical Society has an outstanding online exhibit, “Just the Arti-Facts’, including a teenage girl’s scrapbook, a Civil War prisoner’s diary, and notes and letters from Abraham Lincoln and John Brown, among others, at http://www.chicagohistory.org/AOTM/jta.html.
