The Rhetoric of Film
LMD Journal Entry 10: Thinking about Film
Select a film to view in relationship to the things we were saying about films in class or reading about in handouts. It could be a new film in theaters, a classic film on videotape, or a recent release you have an interest in. Be selective—some films aren't much to explore. Write a journal entry about the film you see in which you discuss its rhetoric--that is, the way it presents its subject and the logic of that presentation; the appeals it makes to the emotions of the audience; and its ethos, the kind of sensibility the film has about itself as reflected in its treatment of characters and events. What elements of it persuade you to adopt a position about the issues of the film? What issues are being explored and how do you respond to them? What are the principal characters like? What does the plot suggest about the logic of the protagonists' position? What appeals are being made to your emotions in this film? Write your journal entry to explore the rhetoric of this film in answer to the questions above and other considerations you raise yourself. (Due March 10.)
