English 460 Senior Seminar: Current Issues in English

Journalkeeping

The idea behind journalkeeping is to give you a place to respond to the readings and discussions of the course as an on-going record of your thinking about individual works and course conversation and work-in-progress.  Expect to write impromptu for about thirty minutes each time you do this and expect to include journalkeeping as a regular part of your class preparation.

Journal #1

This semester, this section of this course will explore issues involving intertextuality.  As a jumping off place, I'd like you to simply introduce yourself to me as English majors or minors.  Since everyone is a senior, hoping that this seminar will be one of the final hurdles that has to be crossed in order to graduate, this is a good occasion to look back on where you've come from, what you've accomplished, and what resources you bring to a course that will ask you to write, to speak, and to demonstrate your skills in the discipline of English.

So tell me something about your background as an English major.  What courses have you taken and where have you taken them?  What direction do you expect your degree in English to take you (teaching? writing? editing? graduate study?)?  Where do you expect (or hope) to be in ten years and how will your English degree help get you there?

What have you read that made the greatest impact on you in college?  What literary works have written about and what do you think of the kinds of academic writing you've done?  What other papers for English courses have you written?  What paper on what subject do you take the most pride in?  What kinds of creative writing have you done?  What kind of writing, if any, do you do on your own?  What kind of reading do you do on your own?

In regard to the special focus of this class, what books have you read that have been inspired by or influenced by other books? What films have you seen that have been adapted from books or “inspired” by them anyway?  What films have you seen that have been inspired by other films?

Put your name on it and hand it in at the end of the period, so that I can preview who everybody is before the next class meeting.
