1328 Charles IV, King of France, dies, without male issue.
Throne claimed by Edward Plantagenet (Edward III, King of England) his nephew through Charles’s sister, and
Philip Valois, nearest male relative through male line of descent (Salic Law applied)
1337 Hundred Years War Begins Philip VI tries to confiscate English lands in Acquitaine
1338 Edward III leads forces into France and in 1340 declares himself King of France
1346 Battle of Crecy, victory for English under Edward, the Black Prince of Wales, son of Edward III (1330-1376)
1350 Philip VI dies; son John II comes to the throne of France
1364 John II dies; son Charles V comes to the throne of France
1377 Edward III dies, and ten year old Richard II comes to the throne of England
1380 Charles V dies; son Charles VI comes to the throne of France. Charles VI (1368-1422) is the French king in Shakespeare’s Henry V.
1399 Richard II is deposed by Henry of Lancaster, who becomes Henry IV; Richard is murdered in prison in 1400.
1412 January: Joan of Arc is born in Domremy, in Lorraine, a region of France
1413 Henry IV dies; Henry V (1387-1422) comes to the throne of England
1415 Battle of Agincourt, major event in Shakespeare’s Henry V
1422 Henry V dies, and his one year son Henry VI (1421-1471) comes to the throne of England and France
Charles V dies, and his son, Charles VII (1403-1461), the Dauphin, is unable to claim the throne of France
1429 Joan meets the Dauphin c. March 9, is victorious at the siege of Orleans, ending May 8, and watches Charles VII crowned at Rheims on July 17
1430 Joan is captured May 23
1431 Joan is put on trial January 9, burned at the stake on May 30.
1450 English defeated
1453 Hundred Years’ War ends
