The Field:

Applied Ethics is the application of moral concepts, moral theories, and moral decision-making to specific problems.  Although it is sometimes thought of as a branch of moral philosophy, it is in fact an interdisciplinary field of study.

Professional Ethics is the study of ethical issues and problems that arise in specific professional contexts.

Practical Ethics is the  study of moral problems and issues that arise in actual, concrete situations arising in ordinary life.

The Center:

The Center for Applied, Professional, and Practical Ethics at  Central Michigan University was established in 1999 by the College of Humanities and Social and Behavioral Sciences based on a proposal submitted by members of the Department of Philosophy and Religion

We hope, however, that it will not be a creature of one department or one college. Instead, we hope to make the Center an entity that will both serve and draw upon the entire university.  To find out how the Center can be of service to you or your department or college, click here.

Goals:

The goals of the Center are

(1) to facilitate and coordinate the teaching of applied and professional ethics at CMU,

(2) to encourage research in applied and professional ethics by faculty and students across the CMU community, and

(3) to encourage discussion of and critical thinking about ethical issues in the university and community.
