National Model United Nations

CMU students serve as delegates at Model UN Conference...

Mission Statement:

  • To gain a working knowledge of the actual United Nations by participating in a Model United Nations Simulation.
  • To help students pursue their goals in order to give them a better understanding of international diplomacy.
  • To gather information on the countries we represent at Model U.N. conferences and to enrich our  lives, peers, and the world community  with this knowledge.

Department works to broaden Model UN experiences

What is Model UN?

The Model UN is a simulation of the United Nations General Assembly and other multinational bodies i.e., UN Security Council and ECOSOC. The program is designed to educate the individuals about the activities of the UN, including current events, pressing international issues, basics of international law, and diplomatic protocol/procedures. During preparation, participants spend most of their time researching not only the issues they are going to de-bate, but also the country they will be representing and their position on such issues.

What do you do in Model UN?
As a member of Model UN you will be meeting with your delegation doing research on your country, the issues, drafting speeches, position papers, and doing practice simulations to prepare you for your conference either for the Spring or Fall class.

Is Model UN just a class offered here at CMU?
No. The Society of the Model United Nations is also a Registered Student Organization here at CMU. With this, we allow students who do not wish to take the class the opportunity to participate in Model UN, but may only attend the conference in the Spring semester, as the Fall conference is only for those who are registered for the class

What do you do at the Conferences?
When you attend a conference you will be caught up in so many activities. You may be taking part in a formal or informal (caucusing) debate, negotiating with other representatives about issues you may want to bring up or are currently being discussed, writing resolutions or amendments, and many more. Many conferences allow free time for you to sightsee, catch-up on paperwork (fun!!!), or just to relax. But be prepared to do lots of writing, talking, and having fun.
What are the Benefits?
Participating in Model UN has many benefits for you. Many of which will help you in the future. Following  are few of the benefits that come with the program:

  • Public Speaking Skills

  • Debate Skills

  • Critical Thinking

  • Dispute Resolution Skills

  • Life Long Friends
