REL 342: FROM SPIRITUALS TO GOSPEL (UP Group IV.C.)

This course will examine the significance of music in the development of African-American religion and culture from the time of the first importation of enslaved African into the British Colonies up the to the modern era. We will be discussing, for example the "Spirituals" of the 18th and 19th centuries, the development of African-American church music, the origin of "Gospel" music in the early 20th century, and the evolution of "Contemporary Gospel Music" today. No prior knowledge of music theory is required.
