| About Me I
was born in 1969 in Traverse City, Michigan.
I attended the Traverse City Senior High School, Albion College
(A.B. in philosophy,
1991), Michigan State University, (M.A. in philosophy,
1993), and the University of
Missouri (Ph.D. in
philosophy, 1997). In the academic year of 1993-1994, I was an instructor of philosophy
at Central Michigan University and I returned to CMU in the spring of 1998 as an assistant
professor. I am married and have a dog named Mackinaw. When I am
not being professorial, I enjoy fly fishing, genealogy, games, guitar, and generally being outside.
My intellectual interests include the
history of analytic philosophy, the theory of knowledge, environmental philosophy, the philosophy of
Ludwig Wittgenstein, and analytical metaphysics (including metaethics). I regard philosophy
as an activity, rather than a body of information - philosophy is best understood as a
collection of different methods of resolving (solving, dissolving) intellectual puzzles.
There are some for whom 'philosophical' puzzles are not very problematic or interesting -
philosophy, after all, bakes no bread - but there are also those who find such puzzles to
be, well, puzzling. I am one of those puzzled persons.
The 2004 Fly Rod &
Reel Trout Bum Tournament
In the summer of 2004
I, along with my fishing partner Bryon Anderson, were chosen to compete
in the 2004 Fly Rod & Reel Trout Bum Tournament (we competed as
Team Leaky Waders). We raised funds for
The Anglers of the Au Sable
while fishing for twelve days on a war chest of $500. We won the
tournament. Details about the
tournament, about us, and about our competitors can be meticulously
examined at www.flyrodreel.com.
We had a really good time and got to be fly fishing celebrities for a
few weeks!
