Segmented Essay
for The Problem-Solution Project -- Progress Report 3
As I mentioned in an earlier class, one part of the creative, “segmented essay” project dealing with your selected problem-situation will be to keep me--and yourself--informed about how things are going for you, what your plans are, and what suggestions you might have. This will be the third such journal-write. (I’ll collect each one after you write it and put it with the others you have written.)
We are nearing the end of the time I’ve allotted for this project, so both you and I need to know whether things are more or less on schedule at this point. Here are some questions which will provide that information.
Of the four “stages” I’ve identified as a rough guide for how this segmented essay usually moves from a mess of possibilities to an arranged piece of writing, what have you accomplished so far and where are you now?
Gathering Stage
Done it _____ Still doing it for the 1st time _____Still add items on occasion____
Selecting Stage
Done it _____ Still doing it for the 1st time _____ Still add items on occasion___
Composing Stage (deciding how individual items will look before being put into the segmented--anecdotes, sketches, dialogues, past or present tense, italics, etc)
Decided this for all my selected items _____
I’ve decided this for some of my selected items, but not all of them_____
I haven’t made these decisions yet _____
Arranging Stage (placing your items on the actual page in an order/arrangement that is meaningful to you--”collaging” the items, that is.)
I’ve done this (that is, I’m finis[1]\hed with this segmented essay) _____
I am in the process of doing this, but I’m not finished yet _____
I haven’t gotten to this stage yet _____
On the back side of this sheet, please do an informal journal-write that deals with these questions (most of which will be familiar to you): (1) How things are going for you at this (nearly finished) point in the project. Well? Not-so-well? What’s been easy so far? What’s been most challenging? Ready to move on to the analytical essay? Finally, since the last “jw”, have you come up with any new suggestions for me regarding this particular project.
