Outcomes assessed for this academic year

Way this assessment was carried out

Expected measures from these assessment instruments

Communication

We compared the entrance oral interview with the exit oral interview to assess oral communication, and the entrance essay with the Plan B paper to assess written communication. All instruments were conducted in Spanish, and we had 6 students graduate this year from our Program.

Advanced intermediate level on the ACTFL scale

3.  Results, conclusions, and discoveries.   What are the results of the planned activities listed above?  What conclusions or discoveries were made from these results?  Describe below or attach to the form.

Results, conclusions, and discoveries

Three of our graduates are native speakers of Spanish and tested at the Superior level in both written and oral communication upon entering and exiting the program. The other three were non-native speakers, and two of them were at the Advanced Mid level when they entered the program but graduated at the Advanced High level. The third non-native speaker was at the Intermediate High level upon entering and graduated at the Advanced Mid level. These results fall within or exceed the parameters to be achieved for this year’s assessment plan.

4.  Use of Results.  Did the results lead to program changes?  If so, describe the changes made.  If not, describe why changes were not needed.

We are satisfied with these results. They speak well for our efforts to concentrate on written and oral communication, and for our Program’s requirement that students complete part of their credits toward the M.A. during two summer abroad components.

5.  Dissemination of results, conclusions, and discoveries.  How and with whom were the results shared?

The results of this year’s assessment will be shared with the other departmental faculty members at the first faculty meeting in the fall of 2005 and will be published on the FLLC website.
