Outcomes assessed for this academic year

Way this assessment was carried out

Expected measures from these assessment instruments

Student writing assignments and oral presentations from upper division courses

[Because our education students were off campus student teaching spring semester, they were not able to take the upper division class in which the other oral and writing samples were collected—as the original Assessment Plan proposed.  However, we used an equally valid and reliable instrument to assess their abilities in the fall of 2004 and the same assessment rubric].

  • Eight students took the Simulated Oral Proficiency Interview (SOPI) consisting 5 separate questions ranging in difficulty of task.  The test was approximately 30 minutes in length.  The taped responses were evaluated by members of the Spanish Section according to the American Council of Teachers of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Guidelines for Speaking.
  • Eight students took the 3-page writing examination consisting of 3 open-ended questions.  These compositions were assessed using the ACTFL Guidelines for Writing

[for ACTFL Guidelines, see http://departments.bloomu.edu/langcult/resources/actfl.html  ]

Intermediate high level of proficiency on the ACTFL scale [In our Plan, we mistakenly named this: “advanced intermediate.” We apologize for the confusion.]

3.       Results, conclusions, and discoveries.   What are the results of the planned activities listed above?

What conclusions or discoveries were made from these results?  Describe below or attach to the form.

Results, conclusions, and discoveries

On the SOPI tests six students placed at the Intermediate High Level (three of those scoring 2 of the 5 parts at Advanced Low); one at the Advanced, and one (a native speaker) at the Superior level.  The scores were the same for the writing samples:  six at the Intermediate High Level, one at the Advanced, and the native speaker at the Superior level. These results fall within or exceed the parameters to be achieved for this year’s assessment plan.

4.       Use of Results.  Did the results lead to program changes?  If so, describe the changes made.  If not,

describe why changes were not needed.

We are very satisfied with these results. They reflect our efforts to concentrate on written and oral communication and to encourage all of our majors to study abroad.

5.  Dissemination of results, conclusions, and discoveries.  How and with whom were the results shared?

The results of this year’s assessment will be shared with the other departmental faculty members at the first faculty meeting in the fall of 2005 and will be published on the FLLC website.
