This program is designed to meet the needs of students seeking
preparation for advanced study at the doctoral level at another
university, students who
wish to teach English at a community college, or students teaching English at the secondary level who
wish to pursue more study in the discipline.

To become a candidate for the degree of Master of
Arts in English Language and Literature, a student must have an
undergraduate major or minor in English with a grade point average of at
least 3.0 on a four-point scale and a cumulative grade point average of at
least 2.7.
For applicants whose native language is not English, a
TOEFL score of 550 and a TWE of at least 5, or a MELAB of 85 are required.
A student must complete a minimum of 30 semester hours of
course work. Eighteen of these semester hours are required in the
following areas:
Literary Criticism (3)
Language and Linguistics (3)
Professional Methodologies (3)
600-level Seminars in Literature (6)
In addition to the required courses, a student may select
Plan A,
6 semester hours of electives and a thesis with an oral
examination over the thesis (6), or Plan B, 12 semester hours of electives
and
a scholarly paper for a total of 30 semester hours.
By choosing elective courses carefully, a student may
design a mini-focus in English Education or in British, American, World or Children's Literature.
