Marion Croft Althoff Memorial Scholarship

J. Carroll Arnett Creative Writing Scholarship

Scholarship awarded to a CMU junior, senior, or graduate student with a demonstrated commitment to creative writing.

Jeanette R. House Memorial Scholarship

Molson English Education Scholarship

William Quine Scholarship

John E. Warriner Scholarship

Award: $2,000

Undergraduate majors in one of the following: Economics, English, Foreign Languages, History, Journalism, Philosophy, Political Science, Religion, Speech, Sociology.

Junior standing or regular admission to Graduate School for Fall semester.

Minimum 3.25 GPA.

Financial need. The student must have filed a Financial Aid Form (FAF) with the Financial Aid Office.  They will be consulted in determining financial need.

A current transcript.

A narrative describing educational goals, professional or career aspirations, and how the scholarship would be of benefit.

Kenneth W. and Margaret Cuff Saunders Scholarship

This scholarship rotates between majors in English, journalism, or physics.  It is currently being offered in Journalism.

This scholarship is offered through the Mt. Pleasant Area Community FoundationSM Scholarship Program.

Declared major of architecture, interior design, music, art, or literature.

bullet

Parents or guardian must reside in Isabella County.

First time applicants must be going into junior or senior year of college or be accepted to a graduate program.

Writing Contests

 

The PoetryJett.com / National Poetry Month Prize

Amount:  $250 awarded to the best poem written by a CMU student. 
Deadline:
March 18, 2008.

Open to any CMU student, graduate or undergraduate, who has taken a creative writing course (ENG 294, 391, 392, 491, 492, 493, 691, 692, 693) during the 2005-06 academic year.

How to enter: Each entrant may submit up to three typed poems of any length.  Each poem must have a cover sheet with the author’s name, CMU address, phone number and email address, the poem’s title, and the number of the creative writing course taken during the current academic year.

Submit entries at the CMU English Department office (Anspach 215).

This prize is administered by the Creative Writing Interest Group of the Department of English, in celebration of National Poetry Month, thanks to the generous sponsorship of Mr. Jett Whitehead and PoetryJett.com.

The Annual Gow Litzenburger Award in Undergraduate Fiction Writing  

Amount: $300
Deadline: March 18. 

Open to all CMU undergraduate students registered in at least one English or creative writing course.

How to enter: Please submit one short story, a maximum of 20 typed, double-spaced pages of fiction.  All stories must include a cover sheet listing story title, author’s name, address, phone number, and e-mail address.

All stories must be submitted to the English Office, 215 Anspach.

2006 Judge: Liesel Litzenburger

Department of English Language & Literature Composition Writing Awards Contest

Students enrolled in English 100, English 101, English 103, or English 201 should consider submitting their best essay to the 2006 English Composition Writing Awards Contest.

The first, second, and third place winners for each category (100, 101/103, 201) will win prizes and gift certificates. More important, winners will receive honor and recognition as superb writers.

The deadline for entering this year's contest is December 15, 2008.
