Program Information

At DB Central we maintain the belief that individuals who are deaf-blind share equally in the respect, opportunity, and life enjoyment afforded to all individuals. We are committed to advancing the recognition of the unique needs presented by deaf-blindness. This is accomplished by promoting individualized, systematic instruction and family-centered planning processes.

We serve children and youth from birth through twenty-five years of age who are suspected of having both a hearing AND a visual impairment. Students who are deaf-blind and have additional disabilities are also eligible for our services.

Cost and Availability

Our services are FREE for families, school districts, and others who work with children who are deaf-blind.  Federal funds provide a grant for this service. This program is available year-round.

Family Support

We are dedicated to the support, education, and empowerment of families. We provide consultation through location, development, and dissemination of information to families regarding identified needs and dreams. The project collaborates with various community agencies such as Community Mental Health, Michigan Commission for the Blind, and Michigan Association for Deaf-Blind. Family/Person centered practices are emphasized. For more information: Click Here.

Educational Support

We are available for onsite visitations to provide consultation to the local school district/agency and/or family. Our services include evaluation of established goals with program recommendations to meet the unique needs of students who are DeafBlind. Onsite in-service training may be requested by local staff/parent groups on topics of concern to the specific district. An inter-agency model is used to assist in person-centered transition planning.  For more information: Click Here.

Census

The project conducts an annual count of children and young adults who are DeafBlind within the state of Michigan.  The census is the main instrument used to track the DeafBlind population and is conducted during the first quarter of each calendar year.
To see a Michigan county map to see where the current number children and young adults counted on the DB Central census:
